• Sticker autograph. He signed a clear adhesive label in bulk, and the factory mounted the label into a recess on the card. Completely legitimate — it is simply how manufacturers produce signature cards at volume without shipping thousands of finished cards to a player. A mounted sticker has visible edges under angled light; that is the label, not a defect.
• Redemption. The signed card was not ready at press time, so the pack contained a placeholder to be exchanged for the real card later. See the redemption section below before you buy one.

Anything else — a card signed in person, through the mail, or at a show — is an unwitnessed signature, not a factory autograph, and it is only worth what its third-party authentication is worth.

The signature families you will see in listings

Giannis signatures are spread across Panini’s basketball lines rather than concentrated in one product, so it helps to think in tiers rather than trying to memorise a catalogue.

• Ultra-premium — National Treasures, Immaculate, Flawless. Low print runs, on-card signatures, and the home of rookie patch autos. This tier holds the cards at the top of his market.

Serial numbers, parallels and 1/1s

Autograph cards carry the same numbering logic as the rest of the hobby, and reading it correctly is most of the skill.

• The fraction is printed on the card. A card marked x/99 is copy x of ninety-nine of that exact card in that exact parallel. The print run belongs to the parallel, not to the product — a coloured version of the same signature can be far scarcer than the base version sitting next to it in search results.
• Some signature inserts are unnumbered. No fraction on the card means no stated print run. That is not a red flag; it is a product decision.
• A 1/1 is one copy. True one-of-ones include the top colour in a parallel ladder and the manufacturer’s own one-off variants.
• Printing plates are a special class. Every card is printed from four plates — cyan, magenta, yellow and black — so each colour of plate for a given card exists exactly once. Four plates, four separate 1/1s, all showing the same card.

Never take a print run from a seller’s title. Read it off the photograph of the card, the same discipline the card-values method applies to identifying any card before pricing it.

Redemptions: what to check before you buy one

A redemption is a real card with a real claim attached, but it is not the signed card, and the difference matters at purchase time.

1. Check whether it has already been redeemed. A card sold as a redemption should be unredeemed; a redeemed one is just a spent placeholder.
2. Check the expiry. Redemptions carry a deadline. An expired one may still be honoured at the manufacturer’s discretion, but you are relying on goodwill rather than a right.
3. Understand the substitution policy. If the signature never arrives, manufacturers substitute a card of comparable standing. You are buying an outcome from a range, not a specific card.
4. Price it as the risk it is. An unredeemed placeholder and the signed card it stands for are two different assets, and the market treats them that way.

How autograph cards are graded

Graders separate the cardboard from the signature, which is why a slabbed auto can carry two numbers.

• BGS issues an autograph grade alongside the card’s subgrades, so the label may report a strong card and a weaker signature, or the reverse. On autos this is the most informative label in the market.
• PSA grades the card and authenticates the signature within the same service, and authenticates signatures independently through PSA/DNA — the route for anything signed outside a factory product.

1. Product and year. Establish what you are looking at before anything else. A rookie-season signature and a modern one are different markets wearing the same name.

4. Certification. Factory-certified with a statement on the back, or third-party slabbed. If it is neither, walk.
